Nunhead Arts Week 2008 comes to an end

Sunday 28th September saw Nunhead Arts Week come to an end - but a happy end though! Ron Woollacott, Nunhead’s very own local Historian, took a group of 40 people around Nunhead and parts of Telegraph Hill. As usual, his walk and talk was full of facts with a little bit of fun thrown in. And finally, I hope those of you who entered artwork into the Nunhead Open 5 collected your pieces or money from what you sold, as the lights went out on the great exhibition that was Nunhead Open 5 at 6pm that evening.

A massive thank you to everyone who helped make Arts Week so enjoyable and actually happen, as well as everyone who attended events. Please keep supporting Nunhead and checking out this blog for events in and around here! Good bye and thank you for now.

And it’s nearly over!

The Nunhead Arts week is coming to an end, but I hope you enjoyed the creative life drawing on Monday night at the old School Keeper’s house, the older person day with the embroidery skills of Deborah Andrews, Joan Byrne who stepped in for the writer’s workshop, the easycome night, the delights of the comedy night, but let’s forget Netto woman and the ever-so-happy film night.

But don’t forget the walk with Ron Woollacott, who will take you on a discovery of Nunhead’s magnificent past. From lime tree lined streets to assasinations - what more could you want to end the ever fabulous Nunhead Arts Week!

FLYAWAY SUCCESS!

The Long nose puppets entertained us again at the Buchan Road Tenants Hall, with the creatively dazzling show ‘Flyaway Katie’. After last year’s fantastic ‘Shoe Baby’, another sold out show was had. Thank you all for your support. Don’t forget Jo McCormick’s exhibition at the Frog on the Green deli - it’s delightfully surreal, if you like fairy cakes you’ll love this exhibition.

Nunhead Green Day

Nunhead Green Day was fantastic, yet again, as the crowds all seemed to come out from every corner of SE15 to don the Green. Not only did the sun shine for us, but we Nunheadians and our surrounding cousins enjoyed being entertained by Dynamo Cabaret, along with the creative print workshop (in the new building), Kate and her recycled garden, the always-a-must bouncy castle, Kevin Boys the blacksmith, Orlando the beekeeper and his very local honey and yummy food by Irie. What more could we have asked for?

And now it’s Bingo time - have fun tonight at the Old Nuns Head.

Nunhead Arts Week (19-28 September) has something for everyone.  Art may be at the heart of it but there’s a lot more besides.

First, the art. NUNHEAD OPEN 5 is Nunhead’s fifth open exhibition showing art created by people in the community. The Preview Evening is on Friday, 19 Sept, 6-8pm at the Old Insurance Shop, 26 Nunhead Lane. The exhibition continues: Sat/Sun (20-21 Sept) and Fri/Sat/Sun (26-28 Sept).

A high-spot of the Arts Week (rather longer than a week!) is the Green Day on Nunhead Green, Saturday, 20 Sept, midday to 5pm.  This is as close to a village fair in an urban context as you’re ever going to get.  Attractions include the pedal-powered Dynamo Cabaret; local allotments’ stall; a working blacksmith, bouncy castle and free BBQ.  This and more will vie for attention in the free day on the Green.

On Saturday evening, bingo lovers can pop along to the Old Nun’s Head for a pint and Bingo Time, bingo with a difference.

On Sunday, 21 Sept, children can enjoy Fly Away Katie performed by Long Nose Puppets at Buchan Tenants Hall at 3pm. ‘Fairy Cakes’ — an exhibition of paintings — opens at The Frog on the Green, Consort Road, with a party from 4pm.  Prior to that, there’s lunchtime jazz at the Old Nun’s Head.

Free tours of our splendid Nunhead Cemetery are offered on both Saturday and Sunday, at 2pm and 3pm.

The programme for the rest of the week includes life drawing at Ivydale Old School Keeper’s house (Mon, 7:30-9:30pm); older person’s drop in at Nunhead Library (Tues, 11:30am-1pm); writers’ workshop at Nunhead Library (Tues 7-9pm); Easycome Music Night at the Old Nun’s Head (Wed, 8pm); Family Reading Group at Nunhead Library (Thurs, 5:30-6:30pm); Comedy Night starring Arthur Smith and the Pull The Other One crew at The Ivy House (Thurs, 8:30pm); Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky film at The Old Nun’s Head (Fri, 8pm); and a Nunhead Walk led by historian, Ron Woollacott (Sun, 11:30am).

Come along and enjoy art, community, fun and culture in our unique and vibrant neighborhood.
